Welcome to Unknown Horizons

Unknown Horizons is a 2D realtime strategy simulation with an emphasis on economy and city building. Expand your small settlement to a strong and wealthy colony, collect taxes and supply your inhabitants with valuable goods. Increase your power with a well balanced economy and with strategic trade and diplomacy.

We hope you enjoy your stay at this page and learn more about the interesting world of Unknown Horizons

Hello everyone,
in a few weeks we will ship our new release 2010.1! It will contain a lot of bug fixes and some new features, literally expanding the horizon of our game.
The two main features will be a working multiplayer mode and the implementation of the new settings-system provided by the FIFE-Team.

The multiplayer mode allows you to play Unknown Horizons via internet together with up to 8 people. These games will be administrated by a master server which we will provide. Currently scenarios only feature singleplayer mode, but the free games should be sufficient for now ;-)
We will implement NAT hole punching so that you are able to play Unknown Horizons in multiplayer mode without opening any of your firewall/router ports.

With the new settings-system, it's easier to manipulate the individual settings compared to the old database system (which used sqlite files). Now all setting information is stored in an easily accessible file in XML format. This allows us to help with debugging and allows the user to make simple fixes to the configuration in case something got improperly configured in-game.

Other updates

We will also be delivering a new version of the English tutorial scenario. Since we changed some of the buildings' level in which the are made available, this will help you getting used to the changes.
Besides those changes of the building requirements we also added some new buildings, which we plan to have fully functional until the release.

Help Wanted

The currently most delimiting fact preventing us from more releases though is that we really lack graphical content a lot. Our artists are working hard, but time is short and they can't provide the massive amount of tasks we come up with. So please, if you happen to know anybody with a bit of spare time at hands:
We are urgently looking for girls and guys who are interested in contributing graphics (like buildings, ambient graphics, people or ambient units, ...) - it does not need to be much! If you are interested, visit our IRC channel: #unknown-horizons @ irc.freenode.net , reply on our forums or send an e-mail to team@unknown-horizons.org. For a quick first look, step by here.

In case you are interested in helping with anything else: this is highly appreciated as well and we'll try to answer all questions you might come up with! Contact us through one of the above ways, preferably IRC, if you are interested in helping out!

Stay tuned for more!

Setting Sails for Web 2.0
March, 13 2010 at 18:23 by Thomas Kinnen in Main development

Hi everyone,
welcome to a short news update on Unknown Horizons!

Web 2.0 - Facebook and Twitter

Unknown Horizons set sails for the web 2.0 part of the internet the past week. You can find our profiles at the networks we use on the left hand side of the page. We will be posting all the newest stuff there, so you stay up-to-date with the newest developments. It's likely that we will post some exclusive news on twitter and Facebook as we will be posting small news snippets there which aren't big enough for a title page news.

New graphics

Terwarf finished the the brick-builder graphics today. They will be added to the game soon and be available for in-game use. This also gives us the possibility to add a new brick resource to the game, which brings us a big step forward towards finishing the second settler increment.  Check out this higher resolution picture:The Brickbuilder's house

That was it for todays update.
So long,

Hi everyone,
we have been a little on slow motion the past few months due to real life that wanted to be accomplished first, but development speed is picking up again now.

We are planning to do a "wiki cleanup evening" on the 7. March 2010. Starting at 18:00 o'clock GMT+1 we will be cleaning up the wiki of old documentation and outdated information. If you would like to help out, please join us on irc #unknown-horizons @ irc.freenode.net or use the IRC Applet on the homepage.

We want to clean up the wiki to allow interested users and developers an easier access to up-to-date information on Unknown Horizons, make joining development easier and help users getting everything set up.

If you are interested in helping development with graphics, programming or sound please email us at team [a t] unknown-horizons.org or join us on IRC. We are always looking forward to new faces on the team!

More updates coming soon.

So long,
